This 1 inch lead free cast copper silicon alloy high performance water pressure reducing valve is equipped for high pressure ranges with gauge tapping and a 160 psi (11.0 bar) gauge. When downstream pressure from a water heater rises above the inlet pressure, the bypass relieves that excess back through the valve toward the supply, which prevents nuisance pressure build-up on a closed system. It is not a substitute for a properly sized thermal expansion tank where your local code requires one - the bypass only relieves back to the street when street pressure is lower, so check the code in your jurisdiction.
