The Watts LF289 1/2 is a 1/2" lead-free pressure vacuum breaker with MNPT connections, approved for high health hazard protection. It features a copper body and a silicone seat. Rated to 150 psi and 33°F to 180°F. This model is certified lead-free for potable-water installations.
This 1/2 inch lead free spill resistant atmospheric vacuum breaker backflow preventer prevents the reverse flow of polluted water from entering into the potable water supply due to backsiphonage. It consists of lead free body construction, silicone rubber check disc, stainless steel springs, a lightweight plastic disc float that minimizes deposits and scaling, a spring-loaded atmospheric vent with O-ring, and a spill-resistant diaphragm seal. It has a compact, space-saving design, and it is ideal for health hazard applications requiring continuous pressure such as on chemical dispensers or factory machine equipment. Maximum pressure is 150 psi (10.34 bar). Minimum pressure is 8 psi (0.55 bar).

- What hazard level is this PVB approved for?
- It is rated for high health hazard (toxic) cross-connections, but only against backsiphonage. The assembly is listed to ASSE 1001.
- Is this model legal for potable water?
- Yes. It is certified lead-free to NSF/ANSI 372, which is what state plumbing codes require for any device in a drinking-water line.
- Does this assembly have to be tested every year?
- Yes. This is a field-testable assembly. Most water authorities require it to be tested and certified by a licensed backflow tester at installation and annually thereafter.
- Will this protect against backpressure?
- No. A pressure vacuum breaker protects against backsiphonage only. It will not stop backflow caused by backpressure — a downstream pump, elevated piping or a boiler — which requires a double check or RPZ assembly.
- Does this ship with inlet and outlet shutoff valves?
- No. This is the "less valves" (LF) configuration — the assembly ships without inlet and outlet shutoffs. Most jurisdictions require approved shutoffs on both sides, so order them separately or choose a QT, NRS, OSY or BFG variant of this model.
- How does this have to be installed?
- It must be installed vertically (upright), above the highest downstream outlet, per the installation instructions and its ASSE listing.
